On Saturday August 14th, 2010 the city streets aren't the only thing that's going to be hot!

Youth Action is pleased to announce that it will hold its 4th Annual Gala to celebrate 7 years of leadership and service. Throughout this celebratory evening, we will recognize the incredible feats that the members of Youth Action have accomplished by way of service and volunteerism in their communities. The Gala serves as our largest fundraiser to assist Youth Action's efforts in making a positive change in the City of Philadelphia and its surrounding areas.

In August 2003 at the Tavis Smiley National Youth Summit in Washington D.C., seven young African Americans teenagers founded Youth Action. At this Summit, the youth were one of four groups that formed project teams to address community issues of concerns. After developing a business plan of their community-focused project (Teenage Pregnancy) Youth Action was awarded a $1,000 grant by Youth Ventures. As Youth Action has grown over the years, our focus has expanded not only on issues of teenage pregnancy, but to all challenges that youth are facing in urban communities. Youth Action is committed to community involvement and are on a mission to enlighten, encourage and empower our fellow youth to improve our lives, our community and our world.

This year Youth Action will be celebrating seven great years. For seven years we have shown that our unique approach to addressing the concerns of our city's youth has not only been successful in encouraging but mobilizing many of our peers to become advocates for positive change and further the cause of social justice. As a testament to our diligent efforts, our faithful membership has grown substantially this year and thus, we have been able to implement more service projects and increase the amount of services we provide to the Philadelphia community. We were able to significantly expand our one-day toy drive to a three-day event in locations in the South, West, and North Philadelphia regions and donate over 1000 toys to children. Our team gave multiple presentations to youth on topics such as fighting obesity, transitioning from high school to college, community development, youth advocacy, and more. In addition, we created a video that explained the effects of sexual abuse; participated in Haiti relief efforts; launched a free year-round mentorship and leadership development program for elementary and middle school children; and more.

Last year's gala was extremely successful, as the event brought together civic, religious, and business leaders around Youth Action's project which shed light on the issue of public health. This year's event promises to be bigger and better. The night will be filled with dinner, dancing and entertainment with a strong underlying theme of justice, equality, and civic engagement. Special invited guests include Mayor Michael Nutter and Councilwomen Blondell Reynolds-Brown and Marian Tasco, among others. In addition, NBC 10 News Reporter and former host of The 10! Show, Lori Wilson, will be the keynote speaker for the event.

Tickets are on sale now. You do not want to this spectacular event!
